The Youth of L. S. I. Vian of Bracciano: digital masters for the seniors from the territory
The European e-engaged project, carried out by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in a series of intergenerational workshops, financed by the European Commission, aims to improve media literacy skills, linked to conscious use of information communication technologies to counter disinformation and recognize misleading news.
The project featured the Youth from the Ignazio Vian Scientific High School in Bracciano, who transformed themselves into digital experts, alongside a group of seniors from the area. With patience and enthusiasm, the young people guided their travel companions through a digital literacy journey that touched on several fundamental themes:
• Using PCs and smartphones: From basics to using software and apps, students taught seniors how to navigate the digital world with ease.
• Online security: A particular focus was placed on creating secure passwords, safe internet research and how to protect yourself from online fraud and scams.
• Safe shopping on the web: Young people explained to seniors how to shop online in a safe and informed way, recognizing reliable sites and protecting their personal data.
• Online privacy and security: The importance of protecting one’s privacy and navigating safely on social networks was the focus of one of the meetings.
• Use of useful apps: The kids introduced the seniors to the potential of various apps, including Google Maps and SPID, to make their daily lives easier.
• Digital civic education: A focus was dedicated to the conscious use of social networks and the importance of countering the spread of fake news and disinformation online.
• Whatsapp and social networks: Young people taught seniors how to best use messaging apps and social networks, to stay in touch with friends and family and to discover new information.
• Safe navigation on websites: The children guided the seniors in finding information on reliable websites and in critically evaluating online content.
An enriching experience for everyone
The initiative was a great success, with the seniors appreciating the patience and competence of the young teachers. The workshops made it possible to overcome the digital divide between generations and create a climate of intergenerational dialogue and discussion. The Bracciano experience underlines the fundamental role of young people in spreading digital culture and promoting the social inclusion of all generations.
